Colt's OFA/CERF Numbers
Colt was sired by my old dog Woody ( see Woody's page)
. He was my pick
of the litter from Woody's breeding to Julie Reardon's nice bitch
Jezebell Of The Hollow . I liked J-Bell for her good looks and
outstanding temperament and I considered her somewhat off-beat pedigree
a plus.
I'd like to say
that my selection of Colt was based on great expertise and intense
study. But
the truth is I swung by Julie's in my old pick up truck, stuck my head
in the box stall where she had the puppies and noticed a very handsome
light deadgrass. I picked him up to see if he would make good eye
contact with
me and when he did I checked his bite (scizzor) and testicles ( two)
and was
on my way home in less than 5 minutes. Colt was a quiet intelligent and
good natured puppy. I really intended him to be my show dog but he
showed reasonable field promise as well.
When he was six months old and ready to
start force fetch I suffered a severe injury to my right shoulder and
lost
a good portion of the use of that arm. So I approached Bill laMar to do
Colt's force work for me. Bill agreed to take on the job as long as the
dog
showed promise. It wasn't long before Bill was telling me Colt would be
better than his father. This is an idea i still reject but i see where
Bill
was coming from. Colt doesn't have the awesome natural talent his
father had
at the same age but there is no doubt he is better trained than his
father
( Thanks Bill).
Colt's strength is his great tractability. he's a good marker and runs
hard with lots of style. Unlike his father who considered blinds a
nuisance Colt absolutely loves his handling work. His water entry is
genuinely specatuclar on marks or blinds.
Due to my work schedule I don't make
many events. Colt ran only 4 times
in 2002, earning SH qualifications in AKC hunt tests and his WDQ from
the American Chesapeake Club. This year he will continue in hunt tests
and conformation shows with the long term goal of a CH MH. Colt is a
good natured boy though a litlle more a typical Chesapeake in regards
to guarding property than his happy-go-lucky- I-love -everybody
old man. From his father he gains close up crosses of the greatest
foundation
stock of modern working Chesapeakes, Chippewa Chief, Fireweed's
Jasmine, StoneECubs. From his mother he adds an additional cross of
StoneECub but more interestingly she brings in the now scarce blood of
the great dogs of the 50's and 60's from MT Joy kennels and the
fantastic marking blood of Beewacker's Chester.
Colt is a striking light deadgrass in
color, 24 inches at the shoulder
and approximately 80#. He is at stud to approved bitches. His first
breeding
to Italian and Swiss Champion Harlem Globetrotter's Brown Sugar
produced 11 puppies. His second litter from my old Decks bitch
Tugboat's A Tad Short
is expected the first week of June
Colt ran two Masters this spring
and got his first Master pass. He will return in the fall to run some
more Masters and perhaps the qualifying at the American Chesapeake Club
Specialty Field trial.
His daughter Tugboats
Ruff'd Truffle added a JH title in four straight attempts to her Sr
title. She also went BOW at her first dog show to get the first points
on her Championship
Update May 2, 2007
It has been a long time since I
have updated web pages. To bring things up to date briefly. Colt
currently has 4 of the necessary 5 qualifications for his Master Hunter
title. Colt suffered a strange injury this winter that had him on
the shelf for several weeks. We don't know what exactly happened. The
vets are making a best guess of a snake or spider bite. He is back to
peak health and entered to run in a Hunt Test on March 4th.
Colt has a current litter born
April 5.2007 and has engagements to several bitches later in the
year
He has also been tested by Optugen
and was rated clear/normal in regards to PRA. He cannot sire a pup who
will be affected by PRA .
